“Differences between boys and girls . . . become problematic when societal or school forces limit the growth and academic potential of students” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2017, p. 89). In this week’s reading, Kauchak and Eggen discuss gender differences and why it is important for teachers to be aware of gender stereotyping and understand how such stereotyping can influence teaching and learning. Also, in this week’s readings, Judith Kleinfeld explores the challenges for both boys and girls in the education system. Think about the age level of the students you plan to teach. Explain how what you have learned about gender differences and stereotyping will impact your teaching, including your awareness of and sensitivity to differences in communication between boys and girls.
There are many determinants of and influences on diversity that impact students’ development and learning. Based on what you have learned from reading “Changes in American Society: Their Influences on Today’s Students” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2017, pp. 54-59) and “Students at Risk” (p. 69), think about the influences that make a difference in students’ lives in school and out (e.g., family circumstances and/or configuration, socioeconomic conditions, and community environments). Choose one area of influence and summarize how it may impact a student’s life and learning. Then, explain, as a teaching professional, how this understanding can help foster effective teaching.
Tobacco, alcohol, and other chemical use/abuse can also create differences in students’ development and learning. Review at least two of the articles listed in the Learning Resources that have to do with tobacco, alcohol, and other chemical use/abuse. Summarize the possible effects of such use/abuse on the physical, mental, and emotional development of students at the age you plan to teach. Explain why it is important for teachers to be aware of such knowledge and, at the same time, be extremely careful not to make assumptions or form stereotypes.
