What does the character want/what objectives do they pursue or are thwarted from pursuing and how are they a reflection of their personality?

The first choice of topic will be a character analysis. Students should analyze and evaluate an important
character from the Odyssey, Antigone, or Hamlet, and consider what important ideas they contribute
either to the idea of being human or inhuman or civilized or uncivilized
Issues to consider include:
1. What are their basic personality traits or temperament?
2. What is their role in the story?
3. What does the character want/what objectives do they pursue or are thwarted from pursuing and how
are they a reflection of their personality?
4. What does he/she do when they are faced with problems?
5. What do other characters say about him/her?
6. What is his/her ‘station’ or status and how do they or do they not reflect that status?
7. What is expected of him/her?
8. What does he/she represent and why was he/she remembered?
Papers should be three to four pages. At least three complete pages of writing. Any ideas that are not
your own should be properly cited within the text and in work cited section. MLA style of reference is
preferred. Papers will be submitted via Canvas. Be sure to pledge that you have abided by the Stevens
Honor Code underneath your Work Cited page.
