Write an essay about a moment, or a series of moments, in your life when speaking, reading, writing, or the like had a big impact on your life. Reflect
on the ways Ocean Vuong and Lynda Barry conveyed the most impactful event in their
education that helped them become who they are. You will identify, narrate and illustrate
how a series of events made you appreciative (or not; it’s also possible and valid to feel
ambivalent) of your education.

Important Note
The first definition of literacy that comes to mind is the ability to read and write, but a
second definition is a professional literacy, hobby-related literacy, language literacy, or
many other types of broadened understanding of a subject brought on by its connection to
language.
Therefore, a literacy narrative is a story about your own experience with writing and
reading, as well as your knowledge on a particular subject of your choosing, whether it
be music, learning a new language, the story of how you learned to read—anything!

details are relevant to the dominant mood you trying to convey and bring the story alive
for your readers.
