We are often are presented with statistics on tv, in the newspapers or in everyday conversation. It is common for people to make statements like “Statistics show that… .”
Review the following list of familiar statistics:
You only use 10% of your brain
Airplanes are the safest way to travel
Those who play video games are more violent
Workers with a bachelor’s degree earn more
Select a statistic from the list or any other well-known statistic you have recently encountered. Respond at least two of following questions. Make sure your post has a minimum of 175 words:
What questions would you want to ask a researcher about the statistic?
What aspects of the statistic are you uncomfortable with?
What questions would you ask a researcher about the assumptions that were made when reaching that conclusion?
What sorts of information about the statistic would you want to know more about in order to make a decision as to whether you believe the statement?
