Amanda,
Thank you for your patience with the resume critique/approval process required for Cougar Jobline. I have reviewed the resume. I think it is a good start, but changes are needed prior to approval. I will explain the recommended changes in this email. Additionally, I have attached sample resumes and handouts to aid in updating your document.
The format of your document needs edited. There is a lot of blank white space and extra spacing used through the document that make it lengthier than necessary. It is best practice to have a shorter, more condensed resume. The document does not need to include everything you have done, just the most recent and relevant experiences. I would try to make this resume 1-2 pages.
Your Skills section is very lengthy. It is clear you have a wonderful skill set, but the way you are displaying this informiaotn needs to be edited. A skills section is meant to list specific key words and skills that summarize your most significant qualifications. I think some of the information explained would be great in a cover letter and/or better used to explain your experiences. For example, rather that stating you are a flexible team player, explain how you worked in a team environment communicating with coworkers, customers and completing multiple concurrent tasks in one of your work experiences. This will do a better job showcasing your skills rather than creating such a long list of your key qualifications.
Each experience you have listed should display the company name, company location (City, State), your position title, and your employment duration (Month Year – Month Year). Additionally, each experience should be explained by detailed bullet point statements. These statements are an important part of your resume as they will show employers the skills and abilities you have to offer. Avoid simply listing tasks you preformed, rather explain what you did in a way that represents your skill set. The more detail you can provide in these statements the better. Try to start each statement with an action verb that states the task you preformed, then explain what you did and how/why. Action Verb + What You Did + How/Why.
For example, rather than saying “Worked with customers” one could say “Communicate with customers in a friendly way, provide information about products and direct specific request to designated area to help customers purchase the desired product”.
These statements should read as accomplishment statements that show the skills and abilities you have to offer.
These statements do not need to be complete sentences, rather, they are detailed statements highlighting key responsibilities and tasks completed. First person narrative (I, Me, My) should not be used in these statements.
Be sure to watch your tenses on these statements. Experiences you are currently in should be in present tense, previous experiences should be in past tense.
Your education section should be listed first on your resume since you are currently pursuing your degree. Your educational experiences need to be listed in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent experience (SIUE), ending with your least recent experience. Your education section should display your full degree title, your expected graduation date, your GPA if 3.0 or higher, your minor if you have one, the full university name, and the university location (City, State). The school name, location (City, State), degree title and graduation date should be listed for your previous certificate experience as well. High school information is no longer needed on your resume. After your freshman year in college all high school information should be removed and only your college level education and experiences should be listed.
The awards displayed on your resume should be college level. All high school information can be removed.
Once these changes have been made, please resubmit the resume to Cougar Jobline. To resubmit you will login to your student account, go to Profile, then Application Materials. You should find the resume that is “Rejected” and click the 3 dots to the right. Click Edit Resume. Choose updated pdf file and Upload. Then “Submit for Approval”. This marks the resume as “Resubmitted” rather than uploading a new resume each time.
If you have any questions or need additional assistance, please let me know.
Have a great day and stay safe!
