One of the toughest jobs that exists is that of a supervisor in a detective unit. Making certain each crime report/investigation is being adequately and thoroughly investigated, that your detectives are doing the work required and doing it well, and solving crimes is a job that gets little attention on television or in the movies.
Please watch the two short video links below. It is a news story examining the extensive and detailed supervision and accountability program known as COMPSTAT. COMPSTAT, as you may already know, originated with the New York Police Department many years ago and its us has grown across the United States in numerous mid-to-large sized cities.
After viewing both of the videos, discuss your thoughts on the use of COMPSTAT. Does this program (and others like it) actually help in the investigation management of detective units an crime fighting and solving? What are the upsides of its use? What are the downsides of its use?
