Discussion: Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development
Discussion topic:
In this discussion activity, you and your peers will be discussing Kohlberg’s stages of moral development. Go back and read about the stages on the previous page (section 9.2) https://openstax.org/books/psychology-2e/pages/9-2-lifespan-theories
if you need to. Complete the steps below based on a classic test used by Kohlberg before making your initial post. (I have attached another chart similar to the one found in your textbook that may give a bit more info.)
Initial Discussion Post:
PART 1 Read the following scenario that is often used when trying to understand the stages of moral development.
In Europe, a woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to make. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick woman’s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could only get together about $1,000, which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said: “No, I discovered the drug and I’m going to make money from it.” So Heinz got desperate and broke into the man’s store to steal the drug for his wife. Should the husband have done that? (Kohlberg, 1969, p. 379)
Your first part of your initial post is to answer whether you think Heinz should have stolen the drug for his wife. Explain why or why not.
PART 2 Read the following scenario that poses another moral dilemma.
Timmy is a fourteen-year-old boy who wanted to buy a particular pair of sneakers. His father promised him he could get them if he saved up the money for it himself. So Timmy worked hard at his paper route and saved up the $250 it cost to for the shoes, and a little more besides. But just a day before he was going to buy his new shoes at the mall, his father changed his mind. Timmy’s father was short of the money for a pair of boots he was going to buy. So he told Timmy to give him the money he had saved from his paper route. Timmy didn’t want to give up his money or his new sneakers, so he refuses to give his father the money.
Your second part of your initial post is to answer whether you think Timmy should have refused to give his father his money. Explain why or why not.
Discussion: Trait Theory, The Big Five test
Discussion Topic:
In this discussion activity, you will explore one theory of personality more closely. The Five Factor Model of personality is quite popular and thought to be fairly universal in that they show up in various cultures, ethnicities, etc. You will take a test to see where you fall on each of the Big Five traits and talk about it!
