Prompt- Part 1 of the class takes us from Reconstruction through the Progressive Era. During this time, the struggle for social justice for those not able to share in the “American Dream” was a constant theme. Cultural and legal discrimination was commonplace. By examining thoroughly over time (1865 to 1920), look at 2 groups and describe the ways they were discriminated against and ways in which they tried to improve their place in this country by the end of chapter 18. What worked, what failed, and why? What was the role of government in both promoting discrimination and helping to eliminate it in these groups? Be specific with examples.
Groups (pick 2): African Americans, working-class women, middle-class women, Asian Americans, Newly arrived immigrants from Europe in cities, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, industrial workers, and poor farmers.
