Discussion 1:
Two events in WWI that I’m going to talk about that expanded the use of airplane for military purposes are the first armaments used by aircraft and the relative speed at which aircraft could be produced.
The article talked about how the first “armaments” used by WWI aviators were pistols and grenades carried by the pilots (BBC, 2014). The development of more powerful engines and increased maneuverability of the aircraft allowed the use of more lethal armaments such as machine guns and actual bombs (BBC, 2014). This transition has a clear path to what armament was used in WWII and beyond. The ability to carry an atomic bomb that weighs 10,800 lbs (Fat Man) (Atomic Heritage Foundation, 2014) to the fully armed GAU-8 Avenger used by the A-10 Warthog (Lockie, 2016), evolved from the early armaments used in WWI.
The other event that had great impact on the expanded use of airplanes for military purpose is the speed at which manufacturers could build an aircraft. At the end of WWI, all of the countries involved in the war produced over 200,000 aircraft (BBC, 2014). Not only was the amount produced astounding, but the speed at which the aircraft was evolving throughout the war and the ability for manufacturers to keep up with that evolution. Since the loss of aircraft in WWI was relatively high, if countries weren’t able to reasonably keep up with replacing them, the use of aviation in war may have been just a blip in human history.
To me, these two events are major turning points in the evolution of aircraft from a novelty in human innovation to military tactical superiority.
Discussion 2:
When the Wright brothers were able to put together the in December of 1903 (Lawrence, 2015), they probably did not imagine that their invention would change so much so fast when World War I started. When WWI started airplanes were not very sturdy and pilots were not very familiar with traversing the skies and knowing where they were flying. (BBC, 2014) When aircraft were being used more and more for surveillance, it become very important to strengthen the aircraft and give them an advantage so they could not be shot down with just a normal revolver. Today the use of aircraft are for “control of the air, strike, reconnaissance and mobility” and all these purposes would not be what they are today if not for the extensive use and development of airplanes in WWI. (BBC, 2014).
With the technological advances during WWI, the maneuverability and combat capabilities have improved exponentially. We have gone from hand dropping grenades, using road maps and atlas’s to having accelerometers, navigational aids and homing missiles being right on the pilot’s interface. It’s almost impossible to think where modern aviation would be without the use of airplanes in WWI.
