Your essay will be typed, double-spaced, 12 Times New Roman font, and MLA format.
Your paper should be a minimum of one page long and a maximum of two (Single spaced).
You must have at least 4, but no more than 5, paragraphs in the essay.
The entire essay must have at least 3 quotes from at least 2 different texts from the unit.
You will not use first-person or second-person point of view (no “I,” “me,” “you,” “we,” etc.)
Essay Topics
Romantic writers are well known for their use of imagery. Pick two of the texts that we have read and discuss how the author(s) use of imagery affects the mood and/or tone of the story/poem/essay.
Pick one of the elements of Romanticism (ex: love of nature, the supernatural, the importance of emotion, rebellion against society) and explain how the author or authors use it in his/her story/poem/essay to develop a theme.
Identify a similar theme in two of the pieces we have read. Discuss how the author/authors developed said theme using literary elements to include figurative language and rhetoric.
Basic Outline.
4-6 sentences
Sentence 1 = hook sentence.
Sentence2 2-4 = brief summary of the story/stories/essay/poem. Brief information about the author(s).
Last sentence = thesis statement. This is a sentence that basically says what the essay will be about, but it does NOT go “This essay will be about…”
Body Paragraph #1. You must have at least 2, no more than 3 body paragraphs.
Topic sentence. Each topic sentence will be a statement that helps support your thesis statement.
Each topic sentence should have at least 2 supporting details – sentences that help support your topic, help show that your topic sentence (main idea) is true.
You must also include at least one embedded quote in each body paragraph. The quote will help to support your topic.
End each body paragraph with a statement that will lead or flow into the next paragraph.
Body Paragraph #2. If you only have 2 body paragraphs, skip body paragraphs #3 and #4, and go on to the conclusion.
Body Paragraph #3. If you only have 3 body paragraphs, skip body paragraph #4 and go on to the conclusion.
Body paragraph #4.
Conclusion – This will be your final paragraph. 3-5 sentences.
Restate your thesis statement (reword it; don’t copy and paste)
Summarize the main points in your essay
“Wrap it up” – add a concluding thought that will make the reader think more about your topic, or that might call the reader to action to read more of these works.
Rubric
All aspects of MLA are present and correct. -Title is reflective of thesis. -Heading is correct order and spacing. -Last name & page number is in top right hand corner of each page. -Quotes are correctly cited in text. -Works Cited Page is correct.
Diction (wording) is excellent, vivid and of a high school level. Transition Words are used throughout the essay.
