Choose an area of English grammar This can be:
 A particular grammatical structure, e.g. present perfect progressive.
 A function or area of meaning, e.g. ways of referring to the future.
Choose or imagine a group of learners from the same language
background
Part 1Discuss the similarities and differences between English and the learners’ L1 with regard to your
chosen grammar area.
Part 2What particular problems might this area pose to this group of learners? You might want to organize
this section into problems of form, meaning and use.
Part 3Select 1-3 examples of published materials designed to teach or practise this grammar area. How
appropriate do you think this material would be for your learners? Discuss the strengths and
weaknesses of the material in how it deals with form, meaning and use. How might you need to
supplement the material to make it more suitable for this group of learners?
The purpose of the assignment is to give you the opportunity to put what you have learned in the
module into practice, and to pursue in more depth a topic that interests you.
The markers will be looking for evidence of the following in their
assessment: You show a detailed and accurate knowledge of the area of grammar under investigation in
the essay.
 You can present a coherent argument with supporting evidence, using linguistic examples
where appropriate.
 You show a knowledge of the literature relevant to your topic.
