After you choose one of the major themes in the novel, write a short paper analyzing this theme, paying attention to how the author develops the theme in chapters 1-5 in the novel. What information is revealed by the use of this theme? What function does this theme play in the book? Why is this theme important in your opinion? What does it say about the internment era? You must include THREE QUOTES from the novel that are evidence of this theme. So, for example, if I were to ask you to consider the theme that deals with legacies of internment, you could use the first paragraph in Chapter 1 as a quote example of how hounded Ichiro is by the number “2”, which ultimately is a symbol of internment and the two loyalty questionnaire questions.
