Are the arts, especially literature, an effective means through which individuals and groups can express their history, their frustrations, and their hopes for the future? How did poets during the Harlem Renaissance do this?

Answer this question in a response at least eight sentences long. Use at least one direct quote from one of this week’s assigned readings (McKay-“If We Must Die” and “America.”, Hughes: “Mother to Son” and “I, Too.”, Cullen:”Heritage” and “Incident.”) for support. Additionally, give at least one contemporary example of an individual or group expressing their history, frustrations, and/or hopes through art –this can be an example from any art form (not limited to literature). Do not quote from the course PowerPoints or the introductions to the readings. Include properly formatted in-text citations for each quote. Other than properly cited quotes from your textbook and your reference to a contemporary example, absolutely no outside sources should be used. A Works Cited entry is not required. Proofread carefully for grammar and punctuation.
