T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land is admittedly a difficult poem, but what happens if we stop trying to parse meaning from it, ignore his myriad of footnotes, and just let ourselves envision the bleak, desolate world he is describing? We are left with a masterful use of poetic imagery, both visionary and emotive. As Eliot himself would say, “Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.” Here, his Waste Land evokes images of water, of fire, and of death. Search the poem for passages that stood out to you because of Eliot’s use of imagery. Then try to create a digital collage representing your interpretation of the passage/poem and upload it in response to this discussion board. Provide a 1-2 sentence descriiption of your collage as if describing it to someone who cannot see it. Then provide a short (1-2 sentence) descriiption justifying your choices in your collage. Next, choose at least one other collage to which to respond. How does the collage represent the poem? How does the collage speak to you emotionally? In the foreground, a hand holds tarot cards with the hanged man card being featured prominent. Behind the hand, there are images of water, fire and smoke, war, and decaying buildings; a crowd of people with cameras look on from the top right corner. For me, The Waste Land evokes images of desolate landscapes, of the destructive nature of fire, and the cleansing nature of water. I also am drawn to Eliot’s use of the tarot.
