In Discussion #1, you have decided to start a business in Killeen, TX and identified an employee group (or job) that is the most critical in delivering the competitive advantage for the business that you have chosen. For example, you may have chosen to start a car repair shop and have identified the most critical employee group (or job) as the mechanics.
In this discussion, we will discuss more about what the job that you have chosen actually do and how we can select job candidates with the right knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the tasks that are required for the job. If you have not participated in Discussion #1, you can choose any job of your choice.
Go to the O*Net website (http://www.onetonline.org (Links to an external site.)) and provide your responses to the following four questions. Label your answers with Q1, Q2, etc. I need to see you answered everything! You will not be given credit if I am unsure of whether or not you answered it.
Q1) Find a summary report for an occupation that most closely reflects the critical job that you have chosen in Discussion #1. There are several ways to search for a summary report in O*Net. The easiest way to search is to use the Occupation Quick Search box located at the top right corner of the homepage. Indicate the occupation that you have searched for, and provide a link to the summary report. For example, for the case of a mechanic job, I have searched the occupation of ‘Automotive Specialty Technicians (Code: 49-3023.02),’ and the link to the summary report is: (Links to an external site.). I have typed in the search term ‘mechanics’ in the Occupation Quick Search box and selected the ‘Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics’ from the search result. Then the webpage asked me to either choose the occupation of ‘Automotive Master Mechanics (Code: 49-3023.01)’ or ‘Automotive Specialty Technicians (Code: 49-3023.02).’
Q2) Now, review the section ‘Tasks’ in the summary report. In your opinion, what are the three most important tasks that the job needs to perform if the job is to deliver the intended competitive advantage to your customers?
Q3) Now, review the sections ‘Knowledge,’ ‘Skills,’ and ‘Abilities’ (KSAs) in the summary report. In your opinion, what are the three most important KSAs that an employee needs to possess if he or she is to perform the tasks that you have identified in Q2 adequately?
Q4) If you are to hire a new employee for this job, how will you assess the KSAs that you have answered in Q3? Do not just say something like “I will administer an interview.” In this case, you need to be little more specific and let your classmates know “how” you will administer the interview.
