Radio and Baseball

Focus on the influence Baseball had on sports broadcasting as a whole, with the first ever sports cast being a baseball game (Which actually involved the Pittsburgh Pirates and this is for a class in Pittsburgh). How it became the most popularized sport early on dues to the talents and availability on air. Then shifting focus on the decline in recent times because of shifts from technology and forms of media like the radio.

Assignment Instructions:
– We spent the first few classes talking about communication cultures and communication technologies, exploring some broad moments in the history of communication. For your first essay, you will explore some aspect of the history of American radio before 1949. The point of this essay is for you to do some original historical research. Rather than relying on a history that someone else has written, you will write a brief history of your own in which you locate, pull together, and present research that illustrates something interesting about radio and the specific topic you select.
– At least 12 historical newspaper or magazine articles, your articles must be dated earlier than 1949
– Your task is to connect the various articles together in a way that tells a coherent—historically accurate—narrative about some way in which radio was used or viewed in the early twentieth century.
– Your task isn’t necessarily to show a particular change or development, but rather to give an interesting picture of a past or forgotten moment of media use.
– Each of your primary sources should be cited both in the body of your essay and on your reference page in the appropriate Chicago Style, MLA, or APA format. Download these articles and submit them with your essay.
– Your essay should have an interesting, specific title that clearly and provocatively demonstrates the specifics of your argument.
– You will also find at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles that help support your discussion in one manner or another.
