Analyzing the Form and Structure of IG Performance Audit Reports

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze how inspectors general structure their written reports in order to communicate their findings. You are analyzing and comparing the written form and structure used in two different IG performance audit reports. You are not analyzing the content.

You will compare the Yonkers IG “Report on South Broadway Bid” dated August 15, 2008, with a federal inspector general performance audit report that you choose from the OIG that you are studying for your term project. (The federal IG reports are available on your OIG’s website.) In selecting an appropriate federal OIG report to use as a comparison, make sure you are selecting a report of a performance audit, in which the OIG conducted an evaluation of a specific program. The South Broadway Bid is such a performance review. You want to compare reports that use the same accountability techniques. Hint: chose a short report, not a lengthy one.

The objective of this assignment is to understand and explain how each IG structured his or her written report, and to determine whether the structure used was effective.

In no more than 4 pages, double-spaced (you should single space bullet points and numbered lists), discuss the similarities and differences in form and structure of the two reports. Your discussion of the reports’ content should be minimal. Only identify the subject matter and findings of each report in 1 or 2 sentences. Hint: You should focus on the headings in the reports and explain what purpose each section has in the structure of the report. Note the similarities and differences in the structure of the two reports.

In your conclusion, discuss whether you believed that the IGs effectively structured their reports and whether the structure and organization helped make the report easy to read and understand. If you found one report to have a better structure and organization, explain why.

You should include a link to the federal IG report that you have chosen at the end of your paper.
