Essay Prompt:
Write a first person, thematic analysis on a complex topic or issue that you believe is important, thought provoking or somehow meaningful in your life or the world today and analyze how or why reading Shakespeare’s Hamlet expands, illuminates or develops your understanding of this issue or vice versa.
In simpler words, how does reading Hamlet help you understand an aspect of life or how does an aspect of life help you understand the themes presented in Hamlet (see possible topics below)?
Make sure to blend external connections and observations (so connect it to real life) throughout the entire analysis to broaden and strengthen your explanation of Shakespeare’s intended meaning or thematic purpose.
Topics to possibly explore:
The nature and emotional impact of grief
The nature of betrayal
The difficulty of finding loyal friends
Honoring the requests of parents or trying to please them
Father/daughter relationships
Mother/son relationships
Finding meaning and purpose in the world
The difficulty of making a decision
The double standards that exist between men and women
The difference between thought and action (strength vs. cowardness)
The mystery of death or the “undiscovered country” or dealing with loss in general
“Madness” and dealing with depression
Our human desire for love and connections
Quotations:
Finally, your essay must include at least five quotes from Hamlet by including a parenthetical citation that states the act/scene/line(s) EX: (3.2.44-56).
Given this essay’s personal nature, it is very important that the essay is presented from a perspective that makes sense for a high schooler to present. So, if you choose to write about finding meaning and purpose in the world, real life examples that are relevant to a high schooler are necessary. So I would recommend choosing a topic that can be presented in a more straightforward way if possible.
Thank you!
