Trace the evolution of policing and punishment over the course of American history. How have these forces created race, class, and gender inequalities? And how have social movements responded?
This essay prompt asks you to combine a review of the historical information with your own research on policies and practices in contemporary America. Here’s how to do that:
In your answer, make sure to define 4 key concepts: unequal protection, unequal enforcement, underpolicing, and overpolicing. Then, explore at least two of these concepts in detail by tracing their significance from the past into the present. Understanding their significance in the past means relying on lectures/readings, and tracing their significance into the present means using research tools to investigate policies and practices happening today.
In answering the prompt, make sure to illustrate not just your understanding of race but also class and gender. In other words, make sure to use an intersectional analysis.
