Essay instruction:
To gain credit your essay is required to meet all of the standards clearly outlined in this Rubric.
1) It must be at least 3 paragraphs long (it can be more, but not less).

2) Each of the first three paragraphs MUST be at least 8 substantial sentences – full sentences, not sentence fragments. (More than 3 paragraphs is fine, not required.)

3 There MUST be AT LEAST ONE empty, blank line between the three (or more) paragraphs.

4) You MUST check your spelling and grammar. Please use spellcheck, which means writing your essay in a word processing format and then posting it in Blackboard – an essay filled with typose [SEE HOW UGLY THEY LOOK?] and spelling errors will not gain credit.

5) Your essay MUST
a) contain DETAILED discussion, analysis and response to the reading in question. This means that I need to see at least two actual citations (more are even better) from the article – with page numbers from each citation (preferably not from the same page). Citing a few words or a sentence [NOT MORE] from the article in quotes is REQUIRED as is the page number.

b) show in-depth consideration of the article or video from the Course Reader or website, and only after this it is permitted to discuss outside sources. The instructor wants to see what you have done with these articles, which he has reviewed in detail, before you can use outside sources.

6) A VIEWPOINT ESSAY MUST be labeled as such – please call it (as an example) Viewpoint Essay Erikson John Smith. In other words, Viewpoint Essay followed by the author of the article on whom you are writing, then both your first and last name. A Response must clearly be labeled as a Response. This may sound complicated, but you will quickly see how it works and will be able to do this easily. Please understand: I am reading many, many essays, and I need you to do this to facilitate my being able to easily find and read your work.
7) IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE to post your essay using a link. You must post the actual words in the space provided by Blackboard. I WILL NOT READ ESSAYS POSTED USING A LINK. I post this every quarter, and every quarter there seem to be some students who do not pay attention. They will receive zero points for work posted using a link.
8) ALL WORK IN THE SEVEN FORUMS MUST BE POSTED USING AT LEAST A SIZE 18 FONT, PREFERABLY ARIEL.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CRITICAL THING HERE IS HOW THE FONT LOOKS TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR, NOT TO YOU. IT IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE THAT YOUR VIEWPOINT ESSAYS AND RESPONSES BE POSTED USING A FONT THAT THE INSTRUCTOR CAN READ WITHOUT HAVING TO LEAN FORWARD AND STRAIN HIS EYES TRYING TO MAKE OUT WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN.
IN OTHER WORDS, AN ESSAY POSTED THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS, WILL RECEIVE FIRST A WARNING, THEN NO CREDIT. STUDENTS HAVE POSTED USING FONTS EVEN SMALLER, these will not be read by this instructor.
9) There will be a point deducted if you misspell the name of an author, even once. This begins in Forum One. Helpful Hint: It is Erik Erikson, NOT Ericksen, or Eriksen, or Erickson
This warning goes for every author in every reading in the course. You may find this a little hard to swallow, but this is for your benefit; it is aimed at helping you to produce QUALITY WORK for this course and for all other related work you will face in your life. In past courses I have been much too tolerant of this, and it has slowly gotten under my skin more and more; therefore this requirement has now become a part of all of my courses.
10) Students are required to make and keep copies of all their submitted work on their own computer, or flash drive, or printed paper, until at least the end of the course. Every once in a long time, a student’s submitted work on Blackboard does not come through. We are able to check whether or not you actually posted when you say you did, but in the extremely rare eventuality that this happens, you want to protect yourself so that you do not have to write the entire Viewpoint Essay over again if and when you are asked to repost your essay.
11) The Essays and Responses you are posting should be seen by you as professional work completed for an upper division university course. You must post your essays using a uniform font and font size, and there must be no broken lines or zig-zags, or strange embedded characters that do not belong. There is no substitute for proofreading before posting, even a second or third time, to be sure that your posted work is “clean” in this basic sense.
12) It is suggested, and will make the instructor very happy (though it is not a requirement) that in every essay you comment, however briefly, on one of the pictures, images, charts or images in the folder page for that Unit, or inside it. What relationship does the picture, image, chart or image, have to the article or chapter on which you are writing your essay? The instructor has spent countless hours gathering, editing, and then posting these in each Unit of the course, and he believes that if you are able to do this in at least some of the Units, you will gain in understanding and appreciation of the topics being considered.
