Major Writing Assignment
Students will complete one major writing assignment. Paper should be written in American Psychological Association 7thedition (APA) format. For help with paper format, in text citations, reference list, and APA writing please refer to https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html. Paper must be double spaced, 12 point (not bold), Times New Roman font, numbered pages (upper right), and 1-inch margins. Paper should be submitted to TurnItIn. Paper should thoroughly edited with minimal to no typos, misspelled words, and grammatical errors. PVAMU offers the premium version of the Grammarly software. I strongly encourage you to download it and use it, not just for this class but for future classes as well! Paper should be at least 6 FULL pages and no more than 9 pages, not including title page and reference page. It is ill-advised to wait to the last minute to begin writing this paper as some information may be tricky to locate.
Instructions:
1. Choose a large metropolitan city in the United States (signup sheet/list of cities will be posted before the second week of class) and give a brief history of the state’s criminal justice system in which your city is located.
2. Explain the crime rate over the last 10 years. Has there been a spike in a certain type of crime? What is the rate of property crime? Violent crime? Other crimes?
3. Explain the local law enforcement in your chosen location (state, county, and city) with emphasis on the city. Explain the organization of the city police, such as the operational units and the chain of command. Be sure to discuss what each position do.
4. Identify and explain the style of policing used in the city you selected. Also, discuss the citizen-police relationship (is there a distrust? Hint: Using an academic source/scholarly article will be useful for finding information on this). If there were any headliners/major cases on police use of force in your selected city within the past 10 years, be sure to include that. Also, if there were any headliners/major cases concerning warrants, home searches and/or car searches within the last 10 years be sure to include that too.
5. Identify the major court personnel in your selected city (Hint: you may have to look at the county/parish webpage). Explain their professional role and duties.
6. Identify and explain sanctions that are given to criminals in your selected city.
7. Identify and explain reentry programs that are offered to those who are released from a correctional facility in your community. Also, discuss collateral consequences (does not have to be specific to your city) that makes it difficult for those who were incarcerated to successfully be reintegrated to the community.
