The Purpose of this assignment is to break down the argument according to the Toulmin System of Argument. It should NOT have an introduction and a conclusion. Address each # in its own paragraph and section. Make sure to BOLD FACE the key terms (Claims, Qualifiers, Evidence/Reasons, Condition of Rebuttal, and Warrants) and use a header for each section (see example).
Answer these questions fully with regards to the article you chose to analyze: You must answer each question in its own paragraph. Use quotations marks when quoting. Number your Answers
Summarize the major claims the author makes in this essay in your own words? (Claims are the arguments the author wishes to prove)
What qualifiers does the author use? And how do these affect his/her argument? (i.e. do they help to make the claims more reasonable? Flexible? ) (To see examples of qualifiers go to page 140 of your textbook). Alternately, does the text use absolutes (words like “all, never, everyone, no one, always, etc.) and how does that affect the argument?
What evidence (reasons and/or examples) does the author provide to support his/her claims? Do those reasons/evidence logically support that claim?
What conditionals of rebuttal does the author address? Are they addressed fairly? Sufficiently? Or were there conditions of rebuttal that should have been addressed but weren’t? Explain.
What warrants are there for this argument? Are they justifiable? At any point does the author defend their values or judgments? (Think of it this way, what values or beliefs does the author expect the reader to share in order to accept their argument? Would the reader see the “reasons” given in question 3 as legitimate reasons and defensible reasons and if so why? If not why not? )
