Using BOTH of the theoretical perspectives of Symbolic Interactionism and Ethnomethodology in your essay, address one of the following options:
1. With reference to three particular examples–two from our readings (such as Mary’s competence, pseudopatients, marijuana use, a gynecology exam, and so on) and one from your own life, discuss how meaning is negotiated through interaction.
2. What is the role of “experts” in defining reality? Do they hold any special qualifications to having a correct view of the world? Discuss negotiated meaning in the context of differing levels of power.
3. Many of us have had the experience, when doing the laundry, of losing one sock from a pair. While it seems as though socks can actually “disappear,” this explanation doesn’t fit the dominant way of understanding prescribed by contemporary American culture. Explore the phenomenon of “disappearing socks” from both the ethnomethodological perspective, as offered in Mehan and Wood’s “Five Features of Reality,” and the symbolic interactionist perspective. Your evaluator will be especially impressed by the inclusion of a discussion of language and naming, as it pertains to disappearing socks.
