Part One: Pick one of this week’s pieces (“Strange Fruit,” “Suppertime,” “Jim Crow Blues,” or “Black, Brown, and White”). Describe how the author (chapter 4) analyzes this piece and explains its connection to the concept of inside-out or outside-in. Does this analysis jibe with any of our course themes? If so, how?
Part Two: Find another similar piece of music online (include a link to youtube or Spotify), contextualizing the song historically and musically. Describe how it too deals with the historical moment of racial violence against African-Americans in the first half of the twentieth century (1900-1959) and how it serves, in its lyrics and/or performance, as a means for the galvanizing community, advocating action, or pointing out problematics.
