Context and Purpose for Writing
You must first determine your topic and purpose. Then, you need to identify parallels (related ideas) between your firsthand observations and the research from your sources. As you outline, you should develop a plan for how to develop and present your paper. You should use subheadings to use to organize your document as in formal reports (see textbook).
You need to determine the focus for your paper. One way to simplify this is to determine a specific field or academic discipline you want to write in. Here are some topics to consider:
Sociology: Evaluate the identity or your Replika AI and explain how the identity compares to your human companions. Does your Replika AI companion replicate you or friends? Do your friends share the same demographic and interests as you?
Psychology: Assess the psychology of your Replika AI or your relationship with it. Were there any therapeutic elements to the Replika AI bot?
Linguistics: Evaluate the language processing of the bot. How were the conversations? Evaluate the quality of the AI chatbot.
Use the assigned sources (including the scholarly sources) to guide your thinking about the topic. Be specific.

Sources and Evidence
Integrates at least four different types of sources (you should use no more than five sources in this paper) through summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation:
At least TWO of the sources in your paper MUST come from posted course material (i.e. things posted in this course). It could be a podcast, video, or published article.
Two secondary sources from a reputable source with an informative or persuasive purpose (such as NPR, The New York Times, Eater, Vox, The Atlantic, or The New Yorker). Sources should be full-length, published articles. Sources should be published within the last four years. These sources could be from content posted for this course (including optional content) and may include a podcast or video.
One scholarly source. You are encouraged to use scholarly sources assigned or use the Santa Fe Library Databases to find appropriate scholarly sources. Develop appropriate search terms and adjust as needed. The source must be published in a peer-reviewed, academic journal. The source must be more than five pages long. Look through hyperlinks from assigned course readings to find relevant scholarly sources or use ones posted in course readings. You must properly introduce, summarize the scholarly source, include the title of the academic journal and discuss the source in detail. Identify what database you used (if any) to find the source in your works cited entry. See: citation for article from an online database.
Effectively Integrating Scholarly Sources: What was researched? What discipline was the article written for (psychology, sociology, law, etc.)? Explain how the research is relevant to your discussion and other sources. Try to identify a specific theory or conclusion from the scholarly article to focus on. (Hint: You can find scholarly sources hyperlinked or sourced in published articles).
Integrate at least three blended and direct quotes in your essay with a proper signal phrase and in-text citation where necessary.
Quotations should make up no more than 24% of your paper. Only ONE block quote is allowed.

Sample Synthesis Paragraphs
Some sources should be seamlessly synthesized. Avoid “forcing” sources together “in conversation.” Use well placed and effective transitional words and phrases to ensure a seamless flow.
Visuals
Include two or more visuals (images, tables, charts, or graphs) that you take or create yourself
See citing your own photograph in MLA (Links to an external site.)
You may also include other visuals (images, tables, chart or graphs) from research sources
Content Development
Review Observation Activity: Replika AI
DO NOT include too much background information on Replika. Assume that you’re writing to an audience of educated experts who are already familiar with the AI program.
Take notes on the secondary sources and make connections. Write down key ideas and phrases. LOOK UP information or words you don’t know.
Develop effective academic-style title that indicates focus and purpose for the report.
Outline your paper before drafting which includes your organizational plan. DO NOT include your outline with your paper. Determine your purpose. Review organizational patterns in textbook chapters.
You should use appropriate sub-headings to organize your paper.
See: MLA format for subheadings
Write well-developed paragraphs that are coherent and cohesive.
Keep your report focused on something specific.
You should synthesize the sources in your paper. Combine points from sources and your first hand observations in paragraphs to illuminate or illustrate your claims. Some discussion in your body paragraphs should include paraphrase, summary, or quotes from multiple sources combined together coherently.
Review how to integrate and construct work cited (or reference) entries for videos, audio files, and images.
The scholarly sources from the academic journals may be paginated. You must include proper page numbers for those sources in your in-text citations.
If you’re writing in MLA format, please include the database you used to find your scholarly source in your work cited entry.
