A Feast? Or a Last Supper?— required classroom discussion

read chapter 21

In 1573, Veronese produced an enormous painting – over 18 feet tall and 42 feet wide! – that embraced the style of the Venetian painters of Northern Italy (figure 21-31 in your text). After its completion and naming as The Last Supper, Veronese was called before the Inquisition! In order to avoid punishment for heresy, he renamed the painting as a Feast in the house of Levi. So… which is it? Write a 150 word post explaining how you know that it is one or the other… are you reading clues in the subject matter? Are you aligning your position with a text? Are you letting the artist determine the subject matter through the title? Discuss some of the pitfalls of various ways of determining what, exactly, Veronese painted in this large work.
