For Part I, you will submit a document in essay format (bulleted and Q&A layouts will not be accepted) :
Identifying the drug or drug category you chose. This is where reading ahead to the requirements of the next two parts of the project will be helpful, because you will know how broad or narrow to make your topic. For example, “OTC drugs” would be too broad, and “acne medication” is unlikely to fulfill the requirements of the whole project.
Explaining why you chose this substance/category for your project. Why do you want to know more about the drug? Why is it worth investigating?
Providing background information on your drug/category, which should include all of the following:
– A description of the drug, including discussion of the forms it takes; how and why it is ingested; the detailed effects it has on the brains, bodies, and behavior of users; and other useful points revealed by your research;
– The classification to which your drug belongs under the Controlled Substances Act, as well as an explanation of the Schedule of Controlled Substances and the meaning of your drug’s specific place on the Schedule. Note: DEA stands for the Drug Enforcement Administration, not Agency.
– The scope of its use in the U.S., including current trends among different populations;
– The current legal status of your specific drug or category; and
– Current events regarding your drug – check news sources!
You must use at least two sources other than your textbook, and you will need to provide a citation for your sources following APA guidelines. If you are unfamiliar with APA citations please refer to the following website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/08/
Wikipedia and similar encyclopedia sites are not acceptable as sources for this research project.

Grading for Part I of the Course Project will be based on:
1) Quality of the work: Your interpretation, analysis, and explanation of what you are learning is important! Give it some depth, and use your own words.
2) Choosing a drug or drug category covered in the textbook to avoid receiving a 0 on this part of the project. This would also require resubmission of Part I
3) Minimal use of direct quotes: This project requires individual interpretation of information. Please define and discuss your information independently instead of cutting and pasting the words of others, or the textbook! Points will be deducted from the grade for the use of more than one direct quote.
4) Title and Reference pages: Part I must have a cover page that includes a title for your project, your name, the professor’s name, and the course name. References should be listed on the last page. Submitting these pages as separate documents will result in deduction of points.
5) Accuracy of the citations using APA guidelines
6) Spelling and grammar: Remember that the more mistakes you make, the more points you will lose, so be sure to run spell- and grammar-check on this (and all of your) work!
7) Length: Part I should be about 2 pages of meaningful content. Points will be deducted if the paper is much shorter or much longer. Your paper should consist of more than just a single paragraph. Papers that are only one paragraph long will have points deducted. The title and reference pages should be part of the same document, but do not count in the page count.
8) Font: Please use 12 point font, in either Arial or Times New Roman. The font must be a dark color, either black or dark blue. Your professors read lots of papers and this, along with double spacing, is a great help to us!
9) Margins: All margins must be one inch.
10) Spacing: Papers must be double spaced with no additional lines between paragraphs.
