Jobs and Ethics
Please read and respond with how you would handle the following hypothetical situation:
You apply for and are offered two jobs of equal pay and benefits. Each job has pros and cons and you are trying to decide which job to select. Using your own personal information (family, preferences, et cetera) and the BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code as a reference, pick which job you would select and explain your choice. You can include questions in your discussion that you may have about each of the positions, if these questions are related to your choice.
Job 1
This is a center and in-home based agency. The agency provides one-on-one service in the home setting for students aged 3–18. They also provide center-based services in the form of one-on-one service for preschool students (when not in a school setting during school hours) and social skills groups for school-aged children outside of typical school hours. This agency does not have expertise in early intervention (under-three programs), but will take cases of children under 3 years when offered by an insurance provider without hesitation. As a BCaBA, your job will be to supervise registered behavior technicians (RBTs) for 30–40 percent of your working hours as well as provide one-on-one service either in the clinic or in the home setting for at least 60 percent of your working hours. This agency has 10 BCBAs on staff, but only three have the qualifications to supervise BCaBAs. The hiring manager has made it clear that the monthly meetings with the BCBA are the responsibility of the BCaBA (you) to schedule with the BCBA, record, and maintain those records. Your hours will be consistent each week, but will not be consistent daily. For example, you may work from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Your schedule can be changed with a week’s notice. You are told you will work between 30–35 hours a week and that some of those hours are consistently likely to be on Saturday or Sunday.
Job 2
This is a public-school based position. This position includes providing one-on-one classroom support for three set students for the entire school year. You will shadow the student throughout the day and assist with school work, social interactions, self-care, et cetera, 3–4 days a week. The school has stated that you may need to be used at multiple school locations, but has stated that the drive time between schools is 30 mins maximum. You will need to be flexible and you may be transferred to a different school on short notice on occasion. The school system has you working mainly with seventh and eighth grade, but one of your regular students is in 10th grade. The other 1–2 days a week, you will be providing training to the teachers or newer behavior specialists within the district. The topic for the training will be given to you ahead of time, but it is your responsibility to provide the materials. There are three RBTs and no BCBAs on staff within the district attached with this school. The school has stated that no supervision will be provided and commented that your position is responsible for providing supervision for others and that your immediate supervisor will be the director of special education who you will only meet with on an as-necessary basis. Your hours will be consistent daily. You will be working from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every week day with no weekends required. You are expected to work summer school with the special education department.
