• Medical Legal Partnerships work to create a partnerships between a lawyer and the clinicians, social workers and case managers within the health care setting to bridge many of the socioeconomic barriers that can have an effect on health.
Here’s an example of this type of partnership:
Johnny suffers from asthma and had been rushed to the emergency room several times in the past year for acute breathing problems. The social worker who has worked with Johnny’s has learned that there have been persistent leaks in his apartment from the unit above, and mold has developed on the walls and is likely triggering Johnny’s asthma attacks. Johnny’s mother has tried several times to get the management company to come and fix the leaks and address the mold, but they have been non-responsive, and Johnny’s mother thinks this may be fueled by the fact that they live in a low-income apartment complex and the management company is largely absent. Through the hospital’s medical-legal partnership, Johnny’s mother is connected with a lawyer that files legal action against the management company and they are forced to make the necessary repairs. Johnny’s breathing improves and it has been 10 months since his last visit to the emergency room.
