Cambodian Rock Band Research Report
In my research, I found that S-21 indeed does look like a school. Today, it is a museum with an expansive archive of the victims that you can visit either in person or even online via their website. However, some images are too graphic to see as a public visitor on their website. Being able to see images of the school-turned-prison-turned museum, it’s easier to envision how the design of a production would look during the scenes in the prison: grim and nightmarish, however, it does seem like a place where a math teacher might feel right at home.
In the Let’s Make a Deal scene, Chum is eating street food. I was able to find an article on Cambodian street foods available in Phnom Penh. One of the juicier looking ones is “Lort Cha”, or Cambodian Stir-Fried Egg Noodles. I’m a little biased here, because a certain noodle place I’ve eaten at serves a similar dish. Regardless, me being able to relate to eating egg noodles with sweet and sour sauce allowed me to understand somewhat how this particular food tastes. So, during a production, why not have Chum’s actor have a little bit of the real deal? I could definitely see this happening, however, they may want to lay off on eating the real thing during rehearsals.
I also found out about “Pol Pot”. He spent part of his life in France, which is brought up a handful of times within the play itself. Duch himself even mentions wanting to learn French, but was instead taught math. Chum even attempts to escape to France before the fall of Phnom Penh. I was able to discover that Cambodia used to be a French colony in Asia, bringing a strong connection between the two countries and making France more relevant to the story. However, French isn’t really spoken in Cambodia at all. This brings to mind Duch’s line “I asked for french, they gave me math”. Perhaps there were more people who were interested in speaking French, like Duch, but were turned down. I also found out that learning French was limited to politicians. Since Duch uses some French himself in the play, perhaps he met that requirement.
Pol Pot’s studies in France included touring Yugoslavia, which at the time was a Marxist state, which most likely led him to go down the path of Communism and become leader of the Khmer Rouge.
Cambodians who fled to the US seemed to settle in places like Long Beach, California and Lowell, Massachusetts, keeping mostly to coastal cities. In Long Beach in particular is its very own “Cambodia Town”, because of the amount of Camodians there and how influential their culture was in this area. However, it is unlikely that Chum himself would live in a place like this, because his goal was to get away from Cambodia in the first place. He’d also stay away from neighborhoods with Thai people, as he resents Thailand for turning him away when he tried to escape. This narrows down the locations where he actually lived in the US. He likely wouldn’t have settled in California, for example, because not only does it contain a “Cambodia Town”, but Los Angeles also contains a “Thai Town”.
