What Utopia? A Comparison of
1984 and Brave New World
1984 and Brave New World are two incredibly similar texts. Often taught in unison, the novels express the struggles of humanity to find social stability, freedom and life beyond the expectations of society. While the texts take place in astoundingly different futures, both represent what the future of London might one day look like. Your essay will explore the similarities and differences in these texts, including the setting, the plot and the characters.
Essay Requirements
● Essay is five paragraphs, including an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
● Essay MUST have a title other than Essay or the name of the assignment
● You MUST use quotations from the text (3 total)
● No first or second person (Do not use I, me, we, us, our, you, my, your)
● No DEAD words (ie. stuff, things, a lot, good, bad, nice, etc.)
● Use present tense to discuss literature (i.e. “The character is…” NOT “The character was…”)
● Essay is typed, double‐spaced, proofread and contains minimal errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar in MLA format
● Title of the text is included in the thesis statement, italicized, and the author’s name is included.
● Essay answers one of the below prompts completely and accurately Prompts:
1. London in both Brave New World and 1984 is controlled by an all-powerful government. In your essay, explain which main character has more control of their lives: Winston or Bernard? Which novels’ government is more controlling?
2. Compare and contrast the gender roles of citizens in 1984 and Brave New World. How are they similar? How are they different?
3. Both 1984 and Brave New World show what absolute governmental control looks like. Is social stability worth the price? Compare and contrast how the government controls citizens in 1984 and Brave New World.
