Social Norms Experiment
On a daily basis, we adhere to many social norms. Sometimes we do this without knowing…and other times, we struggle to stay within the bounds that society sets for us. This assignment requires you to break one of those social norms and report on your experience.
Specific Required Elements:
Choose a social norm from the list below to break, or choose a different norm and request approval in advance. If you choose a different norm to break, there can be NO chance that any person or animal is psychologically or physically injured as a result. There can also be NO law(s) broken.
Begin your paper by discussing the social norms that govern our day-to-day behavior. Why do we typically adhere to these norms?
Describe your experience with breaking one of these norms. How did you feel before, during and after this norm was broken? How did others react?
Paper should be at least 1,000 words in length excluding title and reference page. Quoted material cannot count toward the length requirement.
Provide at least three references tying your essay to academic information in the field of social psychology. Acceptable sources include your textbook and journal articles from our NCTC library. See the library document in our ‘Start Here’ module for assistance.

Social Norms List: ( I chose #10. and #19.)

Begin singing during a phone call or during dinner.
Say hello and introduce yourself to EACH individual as you walk down a hallway or aisle at the grocery store.
Call a friend or family member; when they answer, tell them you don’t have time to talk right now.
Stand facing backwards during an elevator ride.
Have an animated discussion with yourself in public.
Dress inappropriately for the weather. Don’t remove your hat, coat and gloves, even inside.
Whisper when you talk.
Yell when you should be talking normally.
At your parents’ house, ask permission to do everything. (Sit at table, open drawer, get a drink, watch TV, etc.)
Make ‘bug eyes’ (stare constantly) when conversing with someone.
Eat with your hands.
Use overly formal table manners when eating with family/friends.
Ask someone to help you with something you could clearly do yourself.
Bow to people as a greeting.
Attempt to bargain at a store or restaurant. (“I’ll give you $5 for the ribeye.”)
Watch a blank TV. Cheer when your team ‘scores’.
Wear your clothes backwards.
Dress in costume for an outing.
In the middle of a conversation, take off your sock and hand it to the person you’re speaking to.
Carry on a conversation in which every sentence you say begins with, “My cat thinks…”
