In Joseph O. Legasapi’s gorgeous poem, “Whom You Love,” he begins with a Creole proverb that suggests that we are the person that we love. In his poem, he describes in luscious detail the being that is his life partner. Much of this description is figurative, for example, in the opening line he refers to his partner as “The man whose throat blossoms with spicy chocolates.” Aside from this being a wonderfully descriptive line that is rich in visual imagery, the connotative meaning is alluring and suggestive. What does this line mean? What does it mean to you? For this journal, describe the man that is being painted in this poem. How do you imagine him to look like? What is his temperament?
