Article Review from AZTLAN: A Journal of Chicano Studies

GRADE: 20 POINTS
Your assignment is to select one essay from the AZTLAN journal and write a 600-800 word critical review.
Make sure to select an essay from the ESSAY section of the Aztlan Journal. Do not complete your review on a Book Review, editor’s introduction or any other section. It needs to be an essay from the Essay section.
These essays all have abstracts, works cited section and are usually between 15-30 pages long. If you have a question about the essay you are selecting, please email me. I recommend selecting an essay to review published from the last 10 years so that you will have to work with more recent Chicana/o Studies scholarship.
Structure it in the following way:
Part One should be a two-hundred-word abstract that simply summarizes the essay without interjecting any of your own ideas or opinions.
Part Two should answer the following question: “What do you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of the essay? Your review will indicate the essay’s purpose, its central thesis and supporting ideas, and the material it considers.
How to access the journal online for free: You can check out current and/or previous issues of AZTLAN at the Mesa College library and you can access the AZTLAN journal online through the Mesa College library website.
1. Open the Mesa College library homepage at http://libcat.sdccd.edu.libraryproxy.sdmesa.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?&profile=ms (Links to an external site.). You can also find a link to the LIBRARY in the Mesa College homepage at the top right side of the page.
2. In the Mesa College Library homepage, look for the tab RESEARCH TOOLS. The first link under Research Tools is “Library Catalog: Books and More.” Click on this link.
3. Type “ aztlan journal” in a keyword search of the library catalog.
4. You will get about three hits. In the hit that list’s the AZTLAN (Los Angeles : Chicano Studies Center, University of California, Los Angeles.), click on the Aztlán “Online Version” tab.
5. Follow the instructions from here and you will have access to the journal issues online. I recommend taking some time to read through the tables of contexts of issues to find an article that you would be interested in writing about.
Materials to Submit: This assignment is due at the end of Week 7, Sunday before midnight.
