Comparative Book Review Guidelines
**Select a NONFICTION, academic book with Endnotes or Footnotes that is related to this course and is published after the year 1990. Go to the ACC Library (or local library) and check out your book. You are not expected to purchase the book you select for review.
Your FIVE (5) text page Comparative Book Review must include the following:
1) Provide the author, title, publisher, and date of publication at the top of your review, not on a separate page. Follow this example:
Bacevich, Andrew J. American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2002.
2) Identify and explain the book’s thesis, chronological scope, important themes and interpretations. Your review should not simply give a chapter-by-chapter or section-by-section summary of the book’s content. Emphasize main themes!
3) Analyze how the book fits into the existing historiography. Explain how the book compares or contrasts with interpretations presented in other books and /or academic journal articles. Your textbook is excluded for comparison.
4) Evaluate the book. You may criticize or praise the author as you consider such elements as the validity and effectiveness of her or his themes, research, clarity, presentation and writing style.
5) Follow the Chicago Manual of Style for Endnote citations and include a Bibliography. The Bibliography is not counted as a text page.
6) Upload your review in Microsoft Word format to the D2L Assignments Folder. Failure to do so will result in a zero (0) for this assignment. Any plagiarism (cutting and pasting from the Internet) will result in a zero (0) for this assignment.
Writing Guidelines to Remember
GENERAL RULES:
1. Submit/upload your review in Microsoft Word format to the D2L Assignments Folder by the due date (late submissions will not be accepted)
2. Double SPACE, use one-inch MARGINS, and 12-point font
3. NUMBER pages, beginning with the first page of text
4. Italicize or underline publications
5. The MINIMUM page length requirement is 5 text pages!
6. DO NOT add subtitles or extra spacing between paragraphs
7. PROOFREAD for spelling and grammatical errors
