What are the Protocols for Controlling COVID-19 in School Settings in Florida should be stricter.1. Length: 4 to 6 minutes
2. Your topic must be logically debatable, meaning topics like chocolate chip
cookies are the best or why you should not smoke cigarettes will not work. I am
not suggesting you must tackle highly controversial topics like the death penalty,
abortion, etc. (although those topics work), but your topic must have two logical
sides that can be argued. This is not a pro/con speech, you take your position on
the issue and argue that position throughout the presentation.
3. Formal (full sentence) outlines and visuals (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google slides,
etc.) must be uploaded in the assignment window on Canvas before class begins
on the assigned due date. Your name must also be TYPED in the upper right-hand
corner of the outline. You will speak from a keyword outline (note cards or a
sheet, will be discussed during class).
4. Work Cited pages must comport with MLA guidelines.
5. The speech requires outside research. You can use online sources, but they
must be from REPUTABLE information providers, academic journals, .edus, .govs,
TedTalks of decent length. Basically, you must read the actual source material and
research your topic. This will be discussed at length in class; if you have any
questions concerning the validity of a potential source, I am always available. You
need at least five sources, no more than seven. Chapter 12 lists several solid
approaches for research.
6. When citing sources, you must provide the creator (author, documentary
filmmaker, the person delivering the TedTalk, etc.) You must also provide the date
of creation. Lastly, you must provide the publication. When citing sources, refrain
from the following statements, “According to,” “I found a quote by.” You need to
work source material into your speech organically, which will be discussed at
length in class. Sources must be cited verbally during the speech as you use the
material to receive full credit.
Speeches must stay within the time parameters; speeches that are vastly under
or over the time limit are indicative of a lack of rehearsal. The speech is four to six
minutes and requires five outside sources (maximum of seven). Speeches more
than 30 seconds over or under the allotted time will be marked down: 20 percent
reduction in grade for every additional 30 seconds under or over the time limit.
