1. Paper 1 – Analysis
In this assignment, you will analyze the arguments and rhetorical strategies made by Bahraini human rights activist Maryam Al-Khawaja in her 12 Aug 2013 article, “My Parents’ Bahrain.” What is she arguing, what rhetorical strategies does she use, how does she utilize appeals to emotion, reason, and character/authority? What effect is she trying to create with these? In short, analyze the use, quality, and effect of her rhetorical strategies.
The paper will have 3 drafts, each one submitted by the deadline specified in this sheet. The first two drafts are focused on the process of writing, working toward producing an excellent final draft. The first draft is focuses on reaching a required word count, and the second draft focuses on improvements/upgrades and quality of peer review given to other students. The first and second draft are not graded in the traditional manner. They are designed to help the student achieve a high grade on their final draft, and each one has simple benchmarks that must be completed (such as word count for draft 1, peer editing for draft 2, etc.). If these benchmarks are not completed, up to 10% of the grade for the final draft may be deducted. The final draft is worth 20% of the final grade for the course.

Submit Peer Review: Tuesday, March 1st by midnight on Turning.com
Submit draft 2: Saturday, March 5th by midnight on truncation.com
Conferences: Monday, March 7th before and during class.

Analyze in 1000 words the arguments made by Mar yam Al-Hathaway
What is being argued, and how does Al-Hathaway utilize appeals to emotion, reason, and character or authority to persuade her reader of her perspective? Is she effective?
In your analysis, you will need to select examples of appeals from the text that you think are significant and most relevant to the thesis you choose to construct.

▪ Follow APA Style Guidelines.
▪ Use 12 point Times New Roman font, double-space, 1” margins.
▪ Type a properly-formatted title page, including your name, ID number, and institution.
▪ Provide a reference page for each of the three typed drafts you will submit.
▪ Your essay should be carefully proofread and checked for typing and other errors before submission.
