My Own Grand Architecture
From ancient times to the modern, architecture has “housed” the human and other creatures. See Chapter 13: Architecture and pick the favorite building you have visited or frequent or even some place you have seen pictures of and wish to visit. It can be any building at all. The choice is yours!
Identify the location of your favorite building and describe the interior and exterior.
What kind of construction is it? (Arches, vaults, domes, steel, frame. .etc..) Use the chapter on architecture (Chapter 13) to help you integrate terms.
What is the relationship of the architecture to its environment?
What is your favorite part of this building?
Why is it so meaningful to you?

Answers should integrate your opinion and information as gathered from the chapter. Please do not copy information directly from the text. Using terms and coming to your own conclusions get the most points.

Chapter 11: Sculpture, Installation, Site-Specific Art and 3D Design
1. Using examples from the textbook, discuss at least three different approaches to the sculptural portrayal of the human body by different artists. Include your own assessment of the message each artist sends through the work and how you think his/her medium, processes, and technique affected the success of the work in communicating to the viewer.
2. Using examples from the textbook, explore the concept of installation and site specific work. Discuss the reasoning behind such a work of art (BOTH installation and site-specific) and how its impermanence or engagement of the viewer/visitor affects its meaning.
Chapter 12: Crafts
3. Consider Harrumph Kagoshima’s Porcelain Form (page 214). Discuss this work’s technique and the artist’s process. Also discuss how you believe this work might be categorized if one were to distinguish between fine art and craft. Do you find it aesthetically appealing – why or why not?
4. Consider the work of Dale Chihuahua. Why is his work so important? Discuss the specific settings of the two works seen on pages 216 and 217 and discuss how they are related to their environment.
Chapter 13: Architecture and Urban Design
5. Discuss the major tenets of Frank Lloyd Wright’s theories of domestic architecture, identifying aspects of specific structures that illustrate his success in realizing these tenets in homes he designed. Use examples of his architecture from the textbook to support your answer.
6. Identify and describe the impact of one architect (EXCLUDING Frank Lloyd Wright) of the 20th and/or 21st century whom you consider a major technical, artistic, or philosophical innovator. Discuss at least one structure designed by this architect as an example of his/her innovations.
7. Discuss the relationships between the plans and urban designs of Washington, D.C, (Charles L’Enfant) and Paris- Les Hale (Raoul Hauptmann and Rem Hassocks). What does each urban design contribute to each plan of the city?
