On page 247 of our text, the crack writing team of Starr and Waterman give us the following nugget of truth:
“The emergence of rock ‘n’ roll was surely an event of great significance in cultural terms. Because of its importance, we must be careful not to mythologize it or to endorse common misconceptions about it. In particular, the following issues demand our attention: first, rock ‘n’ roll was neither a ‘new’ style of music, nor any single style of music; second, the era of rock ‘n’ roll does not mark the first time that music was written specifically to appeal to young people; and third, rock ‘n’ roll is certainly not the first American music to bring black and white popular styles into close interaction.”
Explain, addressing each of the three points listed. I’m not concerned with the minutiae, but use examples from the styles and decades we’ve covered so far. Use your book and any other credible sources you see fit.
