What is a summary?
When you write a summary of any kind, you retell the main points and purpose of a piece of writing in your own words. Summaries must be comprehensive so that nothing essential to understanding the main ideas of a text gets excluded; summaries must also be accurate. Striving for accuracy in this case means “free” of outsiders’ biases and/or misinterpretations. The reader should be able to understand the main points and purpose of what was printed in the original without having to read it. The reader relies on you, the summary writer, for understanding main idea(s). Be a dependable and responsible summary writer!
How do I come up with my own summary of a scholarly source?
Make use of the all the resources available to you and keep in mind the following:
Summaries are usually one-third the length of the original
Summaries include a recap of the major points and purpose of the article
Summaries are always a retelling in your words, no quoting allowed!
Summaries never include the summarizer’s opinion.
