For a cultural group different from your own, list three culturally based behaviors that may not promote health, and explain how you would provide respectful health promotion education to that cultural group.
Many factors influence individual health choices and practices, especially cultural beliefs, family influences, and socioeconomic factors. This week, the differences resulting from cultural and family influences will be explored to gain appreciation of the different practices people have involving health, wellness, and illness. Becoming culturally sensitive to individuals with different beliefs will cultivate competence through a cultural humility for those in your care who believe and behave differently than you.
Cultural practices vary greatly around the world and can be seen in how individuals maintain their own health. Health practices often stem from cultural influence. It is important for the nurse to show acceptance for health practices that have no negative impact on the person’s well-being while asking questions to understand others.
The course outcomes covered in this week’s discussion include:
1. Discuss the professional nurse’s role in health-promotion activities.
2. Examine theories and concepts related to health-promotion behaviors.
3. Discuss health promotion, illness prevention, health maintenance, health restoration, and rehabilitation in relation to the nurse’s role in working with various populations.
6. Discuss attitudes and actions that influence personal, educational, and professional development.
7. Identify health-promotion strategies throughout the life span.
