Your MIDTERM EXAM will be here before you know it. By the time you get there however, you should have all of your essays prepared and ready to go. On the day of the exam, you will have 3 hours (it is a “timed” exam) to cut and paste 1 or 2 of these essays in full, along with some short-answer essays. In other words, the essays that I don’t ask you, will be covered in a series of “short answer” questions.
These prepared essays should be a minimum of one typed page long (single-space).
For the “short answers” I will ask you to write 2 paragraphs for each term: one paragraph that defines the term, and a second paragraph that tells why it is important.
You will be able to use pieces of your prepared essays to answer these short-answer essays as well.
All of these essays are designed to bring your information together and force you to come up with your own interpretation of events–supported by the facts, of course.
More importantly however, they are designed to see if you have read the LECTURES. Since you have already been tested on the textbook and articles, these essays must include information and interpretation from the lectures–not from your textbook or Google. I need to see the lectures in your essays.
I strongly urge you to prepare your essays as soon as we finish the topic, while everything is still fresh in your mind
1. Describe the differences between Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction by describing the goals, methods and the consequences of both Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction.

2. Discuss the impact that racism, assimilation (Americanization)and segregation had upon Native Americans, “New Immigrants” and African Americans after the Civil War. Please use a specific government policy for each of these 9 categories.

Also, don’t forget that I am looking for a specific government policy, not just general language that talks about the behaviors:
For example, if you are looking at the assimilation of African Americans, you would need to discuss a piece of legislation from Radical/Congressional Reconstruction, because its goal was to assimilate the newly freed slave into a truly biracial society in the south.
If you are discussing racism towards the Native Americans, you could cite the deliberate destruction of the buffalo or perhaps the government’s outlawing of the Ghost Dance as a specific government policy that supported this racism.
And, if you were talking about the segregation of the New Immigrants, then the Ethnic communities carved out by the urban bosses would be a good example.
These are only suggestions and they are only 3 out of the 9 categories that I am asking you to discuss ~but I think you can get the idea from these 3 examples.
3. Describe Woodrow Wilson’s attempt to keep the United States out of World War I:
In what ways did President Wilson’s own actions undercut his desire to keep the country at peace?
Why did the United States enter World War I?
4. Compare President Hoover’s response to the Great Depression with President Roosevelt’s response:
What strategies did they both employ?
How effective were they at lifting the economy out of the depression and providing relief to suffering Americans?
