Compare point of view in Oates’ “Mark of Satan” and Galeano’s “The Story of the Lizard Who Had the Habit of Dining on His Wives.” Or you could compare “Mr. Green” and “Everything in This Country Must.” How do the authors prepare you for the endings and surprise you with them? Your essay must have a clear, direct thesis statement.
Refer to the material posted in the “Resources” Module for writing about literature. It is a valuable source for tips and examples.
Remember that the evidence for an argument about literature is first and foremost the literary text under analysis. As the reader is already familiar with the literary work, there is no need to include detailed plot summary (points will be deducted for this). A summary of events is not analysis.
You will need to use the primary texts and one authored outside source; i.e. a critical commentary. Use credible, authoritative source- NOT Wikipedia, dictionary.com, Sparknotes, Schmoop, encyclopedias, etc. If you have a question about whether a source is appropriate ask me or don’t use it. All references, including from the literary work, must be cited in the text and on a Works Cited page. Note course policies on plagiarism. I am very strict about you using MLA because learning an academic format for writing college papers is the first path against plagiarism.
Papers must be a minimum of 4 pages, double-spaced, standard one inch margins, and 12 pt. font. Papers must follow MLA format (direct link to Purdue Owl MLA is in RESOURCES). Works Cited page does not count in the minimum page count.
Papers should be written in third person –no “I,” no “you.” No contractions.
Grading Rubric:
60% completely answers or addresses the prompt; does not re-tell plot; successfully uses an essay structure (paragraphing, thesis statement, organization).
30% effective use of appropriate source and correct MLA formatting including in-text citations (to avoid plagiarism).
10% proper mechanics and grammar including fluidity, which means connecting your quotes to your words so it is clear to the reader what you mean.
DO NOT USE EXTERNAL SOURCE TO TALK ABOUT THE AUTHOR. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE.
