Essay #2- Compare and Contrast
This is a longer assignment than your first: 1,000-1,500 words. You should focus on two stories
we’ve read between Weeks 4-9:
Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily,”
Saunders’ “Puppy,”
Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle,”
Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,
Jewett’s “The White Heron,’
Chopin’s “Desiree’s Baby,”
Mansfield’s “The Garden Party,”
Wolfs Kew Gardens.” and
Joyce’s “Araby”
The organization is up to you, but an introduction is necessary, in which
you will introduce the scene, contextualize the scene, and provide your thesis statement. You may
compare between stories or focus on one story, then the next. You should also have a conclusion in
which you restate your main point(s), but also wrap things up nicely for your reader.
