These presentations are lengthy and supplement the chapter in the book. It’s all about graphic design, its purpose, origination and effect. Pay attention to your own reaction to the samples provided, and consider how a design makes you feel. More specifically, does the design evoke a concept that isn’t based in reality, or does it express an idea in a way words cannot?

What is good graphic design? Let’s assume it is the visual ability to communicate a thought or idea in a way that words cannot.

For this discussion, find one graphic design, or create your own, that expresses an idea not better described using words. It should not be a word or sentence. Post it here, and then list which perspectives enable its success.

Don’t use any of the examples provided in the book or slides. Try to write as few words as possible to make your point. (That’s a lot more difficult than writing a lot, but let’s give it a shot to see if we can strengthen our position.
THIS NOTE IS FROM THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER. THE PROMPT HAS BEEN UPDATED FOR SPRING 2022.

Grading note:

One thing I learned from this assignment is to require each design submitted to not have any words to it. That is, be more specific in my direction. I assumed that would be understood, but I was wrong. Generally speaking, I deducted a point if your graphic relied on a word or words to convey its meaning, even if the graphic was the word itself. I could be debated on that, so feel free to make your case.

I also deducted a point if you made no mention of perspective involved.
