Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give students the opportunity to observe a child as they play to determine type of play and how that play meets the needs of the whole child. This assignment will be done in two sections, first a clear picture of the observation and then a reflection will be done on what is observed.
• Please add a title page and reference page (APA format). Points will be deducted for incorrect grammar, spelling and format
• On the top of page two of your paper put the following information.
▪ Date of observation
▪ Time observation began and the time the observation ended
▪ Place of observation
Section one:
Observe a child while they play and provide a detailed summary of what the child is doing. You should spend at least 15 to 20 minutes observing the child playing. You can use your own child, family member or friend’s child. (Paint a picture that your reader can use to “see” what you saw).
Section two:
• Reflect on what you witnessed during your observation. Now identify what type of play the child was involved in (refer to Parten’s stages of Play in Chapter 8, page 146). Provide examples from your observation that support your reasoning for choosing the stage of play.
• Once you have identified the type of play, now look at how that play is supporting the needs of the child in the following developmental domains:
▪ Socially
▪ Physically
▪ Emotionally
▪ Cognitively
• Make sure to provide examples from your observation as support on how the child’s play is meeting the developmental domains.
