1. Write an essay describing what you believe constitutes “successful aging”. You can discuss one or more of the models discussed in class or create your own. Cite any sources used other than your own thoughts and observations.
2. You are working as the activity director in a long-term care facility. A new resident, Cora Petersen, has recently moved into the facility. You notice that she comes into the activity center 2-3 times a week, but she does not engage in activities. When you ask her if she wants to participate, she declines politely telling you “no” as she is waiting for one of her family members to come and take her back home. During the weekly staff meeting, you inform your team members of your observation and the Social Worker tells you that her children have sold her home of over 50 years to help pay for her care at the nursing home. The children have not told Cora they have done this though.A couple of weeks pass and Cora continues to come into the Activity Center but still does not engage in any of the activities. You notice she frequently touches the closed piano and she seems increasingly anxious.
2. Using the scenario above, apply one of the following models of mental health, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, stress and coping, or family systems model. Write a 2-4 paragraph essay describing how you would assess the situation, what questions would you ask Cora? What questions would you ask of others? What are the important factors? Describe strategies you would use to assist Cora. Provide sufficient detail in your response that demonstrates your understanding of the chosen model. It is acceptable to add additional detail to the scenario as long as you indicate how the additional information was obtained. Be sure to identify the model you are using and cite any resources you use.
3. Write an essay describing how your own attitudes about aging and/or mental health have changed since the start of the semester.
4. You are the director of a senior center in your community and you want to provide a program for older adults experiencing a serious mental health disorder in your community. Choose one of the 5 evidenced-based practices presented in the Psychosocial Interventions for Older Adults with Serious Mental Illness resource guide that you want to implement in your community. Discuss the reasons why you chose the one you did and identify some of the challenges you may have to overcome to offer the program at your center. (Following chapter 3 in the guide will help you with this response.)
