This assignment is a paper on the medical case presented in chapter 7 of Munson.
The assignment is one paper with two parts: a 4+ page response from one of the consequentialist theories of ethics we discussed in class AND a 4+ page response from one of the non-consequentialist theories of ethics we discussed in class.
Below are the thesis statements from which you may choose for each part of your paper. Choose one thesis statement from the consequentialist set and one thesis statement from the non-consequentialist set.
Consequentialist Thesis Statements (for Part I):
* From the utilitarian ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the utilitarian ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should not be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the virtue ethics perspective, Rob Dwyer should be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the virtue ethics perspective, Rob Dwyer should not be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
Non-consequentialist Thesis Statements (for Part II):
* From the Kantian ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the Kantian ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should not be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the Divine Command Theory ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
* From the Divine Command Theory ethical perspective, Rob Dwyer should not be listed as qualified for a heart transplant.
You will need to have read Munson, chapter 7, carefully before attempting to write this paper. Moreover, the paper should give evidence that the chapter has been read carefully, and that the ethical theories you have chosen to discuss have been properly understood. This is not a research paper, but a paper that demonstrates comprehension of the ethical theories and skills in moral reasoning as applied to the case at hand.
You should structure your paper in an ethical decision making way that defends and explains why the thesis you have chosen is true and why the other claim is false:
REQUIRED for each Part
1. Provide an introduction including the thesis you chose from above and any relevant context, e.g. facts about the case, definitions of terms, etc.
2. Clearly articulate a precise set of claims that support your thesis, carefully explaining why you believe these claims to be true, and how they support your thesis.
3. Present a carefully considered counter-argument to your position.* (This will not count towards the 4+ required pages for either Part I or Part II.)
4. Present a carefully considered rebuttal to that counter-argument.* (This will not count towards the 4+ required pages for either Part I or Part II.)
* You will not receive a reduced score if you do not attempt #3 and #4, however, if you do attempt #3 and #4 successfully then you will receive up to 2 points of extra credit:
* 1 point for successfully completing Option 3 and Option 4 for Part 1.
* 1 point for successfully completing Option 3 and Option 4 for Part 2.
Format: Typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12-point font, Title Page (title, student name, course title, professor names, and date) NOTE: the Title Page, while required, does not count toward either of your 4+ page parts of your paper. No bibliography is required. This a PAPER (with paragraphs) where arguments are being presented. A series of bullet points will NOT suffice. The paper should be submitted as a single .doc or .docx file.
