Ethnographic

Chapter 19 outlines the cultural approach to organizational communication. It also outlines the ethnographic process used to study organizational culture. Writing ethnography is a specific type of theoretical writing that uses thick descriiption to help readers understand the sights, smells, dynamics, and intricacies of an organization. The textbook explains that an ethnographer has five tasks:

Accurately describe talk and actions and the context in which they occur.

Capture the thoughts, emotions, and the web of social interactions.

Assign motivation, intention, or purpose for what people said and did.

Artfully write this up so readers feel they’ve experienced the events.

Interpret what happened; explain what it means within this culture.

Your assignment is to write a 4-6 paragraph ethnography of an organization you belong to. This could be school, a class, work, church, or volunteer organization. I will be grading this assignment on how well you use thick descriiption to help me imagine I am a member of the organization and what it is like. If you are quarantining and/or staying home during this pandemic, you may observe a safe place, (such as a park) that is outdoors and you can social distance, or your home, if you are around family or roommates.
