Background:
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are currently the focus of fierce social and political debates. However, as with any debate, the issues are not black and white. In this activity, you will investigate both sides of the debate, and then make a decision about whether or not you would support GMO research. Support your decision with specific evidence and reasons.
Be selective with your resources. This is an emotional debate. As science students, you will need to find resources that back up their arguments with research and evidence.
Procedure:
Use internet resources to explain how a gene can be transplanted from one organism to another.
Compare the positive and negative impacts of GMO research by finding an example of a use of a GMO that potentially has a positive impact and one that potentially has a negative impact. Use reputable scientific resources and specific details to support your comparison.
Make a recommendation on whether or not research in GMOs should continue. Support your decision with specific evidence and reasons.
Cite your sources using AMA format.
Respond to at least two other student postings.
Contribute to an ongoing discussion by responding to a comment on your thread or by responding to a comment on another student’s thread.
References should be cited in proper AMA format.
